Last year’s situation

After this, the Sensex gained 3.53 percent in the next five sessions. The budget was presented on 1 February 2020 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Earlier, Sitharaman presented the first budget of the second term of the Modi government in the year 2019 on 5 July. The Sensex was up 0.3 per cent in the budget week then. But on the budget day, it fell by 395 points.

In the year 2018, the Sensex fell by 4.16 percent in the week after the budget. The Sensex had lost 0.7 per cent in the week before the budget. Then the budget was presented by Arun Jaitley. The Sensex had fallen by 59 points on the budget day. In 2017, the Sensex gained 2.8 percent in the week before the budget. It declined 0.53 per cent in the week following the budget. It had jumped 476 points on the budget day.

Condition of first term

In the Modi government’s tenure till date, the stock market performance was the best since the budget in 2016. Then the Sensex had fallen by 3.3 per cent before the budget. It had dropped 52 points on the budget day. But in the week after the budget, it had increased by 7.2 percent. In 2015, the Sensex rose 1.33 percent in the week before the budget. It rose 141 points on the budget day. But in the week following the presentation of the budget, it declined by 1.76 percent. The budget was presented on 10 July 2014. This was the first budget of the Modi government. The Sensex fell by 1.75 percent in the week before the budget that year. The Sensex had dropped 72 points on the budget day. In the week following the budget, it had increased by 0.74 percent.
