The incident took place in anti-government protests in Hong Kong where an activist has been shot in the chest by a police officer. This was the worst day of violent unrest that has hit Hong Kong in half a century. This took place when thousands of protestors demonstrated to ban for the 70th anniversary of Communist rule in China.
This is the first time when a live round was shot and injury is reported as earlier rubber bullets were used in protests.
On Tuesday, October 1, 2019, video footage was shared, which showed police officer firing Tsang Chi-kin, an 18-year-old high-school student, when he swung him with a metal bar. In another footage he was seen on the ground and blood was gushing from his chest.
The teenager underwent emergency surgery and his condition was reported critical early Wednesday.
The protest challenged the President‘s vision of national unity, which is now lasted for nearly four months.
Day of grief (anniversary), which is described by the protestors, people took streets in central Hong Kong and other districts too and blocked the roads.
It was reported that at least 66 protestors were injured different during clashes.
The violence marked an embarrassment for Beijing, despite the President’s repeated demands for smooth celebrations.
Beijing has shown its preference to let the city’s government take the lead in resolving this crisis. Officials warned that they reserve the right of stepping in if the situation gets out of hand.
Some academics have also urged Hong Kong’s government for considering invoking emergency laws, which includes expanded arrest powers and asserting control over transportation and media.
Official Chinese media ignored the violence and stuck to the stories of Hong Kong patriots who celebrated China’s National Day. An article was published by the state-run Xinhua news service, which says that a man was shot when he threatened a police officer and is now stable.
Protestors have other demands besides bill withdrawal. Main is the establishment of a judge-led commission that will investigate violent behavior of the police.
Responding to the police shooting, internet users on LIHKG, a Reddit-like news site has called for more people in supporting a citywide strike that is planned for Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
Police said they fired live rounds six times. More than 180 arrests were made; and health officials said 74 people, who aged from 11 to 75, were hospitalized, which includes two in critical condition.
