The Delhi government has deployed 40 teams to curb the polluting vehicles. The focus is on 13 pollution hotspots selected by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, including places like Anand Vihar, RK Puram, Vivek Vihar.

If you do not have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate for your vehicle, then be prepared to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 the next time you hit the road. The Transport Department of Delhi Government has started a special campaign against polluting vehicles and most of the challans have been done due to lack of PUC certificate.

40 teams deployed

“We have deployed 40 teams across Delhi to investigate and punish the polluting vehicles and focus on 13 pollution hotspots selected by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee,” said a Transport Department official. He said that at these hotspots a joint team of our Enforcement wing officers, DPCC officers and Delhi traffic policemen are also collecting diesel and petrol samples from the vehicles.

1,000 to 10,000 rupees fine

The penalty has been increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 for not having a valid PUC certificate under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, which came into force from 1 September 2019 in Delhi. Due to a ten-fold increase, there was a sudden increase in congestion in about 1,000 PUC centers in Delhi and the Transport Department issued 14 lakh PUC certificates in that month.

Validity of documents increased

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has extended the validity of all transport documents such as driving license, fitness, permit, registration etc. which are expiring from 1 February to 30 September 2020. Officials of Delhi’s transport department, however, did not say that vehicles with PUC certificate are being exempted. It has been said by the Ministry that vehicle owners will not be spared if PUC certificate is not there. They should have their vehicles checked at any nearest PUC center on time.
