Mizoram men have the highest rate of cancer cases: report

According to the report released on Tuesday, Arunachal Pradesh had the highest number of cancer cases among women at a rate of 219.8 per one lakh population.

Cancer incidence rate is the number of new cancer cases per one lakh. While the age weighted rate of cancer (age adjusted cancer incidence rate) is the age weighted average of new cases of cancer in different age groups.

According to the study, Aizawl district in Asia has the highest rate of lung cancer among women and the rate of stomach cancer in men is also highest among non-Asian countries. The cases of cancer related to tobacco are also highest in the northeastern states of India.

Meanwhile, Director of National Health Campaign (NHM), Dr. Eric Jomavia said that excessive use of tobacco and disorderly lifestyle is responsible for the highest number of cancer cases in Mizoram. He said that the government is taking steps to stop the increasing cases of cancer in the state.

He said that the state government has run a program under NHM. He said that the state government will establish a super specialty hospital of cancer at Aizawl at a cost of 500 crores.
