Noted classical singer Pandit Jasraj has died on Monday in America. He was 90 years old.

Pandit Jasraj’s granddaughter Meenakshi has confirmed her death with BBC’s associate journalist Madhu Pal.

His family has issued a statement saying that he died of a heart attack at his home in New Jersey, USA.

He died at 5.15 am local time.

Pandit Jasraj, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, was born into a family of musicians. He was introduced to music by his father Pandit Motiram.

His father died when Jayaraj was only four years old. After this, his brother and Guru Pandit Maniram started his music education.

Pandit Jasraj had a relationship with the Mewati Gharana of music, which was started by Pandit Ghagg Nazir Khan of Jodhpur. Pandit Jasraj’s father had studied music from his disciple Pandiya Nathulal.
