Rohit Sharma, Manika Batra, Vinesh Phogat and Thangavelu nominated for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

The decision was taken in the selection panel meeting on Tuesday to decide the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and other National Sports Awards.

India’s superstar batsman Rohit Sharma has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the highest award in the country. Along with him, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and 2016 Paralympic gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu have also been nominated for the prestigious award.

This decision was taken in the selection panel meeting on Tuesday to decide the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and other National Sports Awards. The sports minister will now confirm the award. Once confirmed by the minister, President Ramnath Kovind will present the award. If Rohit Sharma gets the award, he will become the fourth cricketer to do so. Before him Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli got the Khel Ratna.

In May this year, the right-handed batsman was nominated for the award by the BCCI. The year 2019 was a great year for Rohit Sharma with the bat. The right-handed batsman has many records especially in the format of ODI figures. He finished the year as the highest run-scorer in the 50-over format, scoring 1,490 runs in ODIs with seven centuries. The most by any player in a calendar year.

He was the strongest batsman for India in the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup. He was the top scorer with 648 runs. Rohit Sharma also scored a record five centuries in the competition. Earlier this year, he was named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year.
