Most of the people who have Corona virus infection can be cured by taking rest and medicines like paracetamol.

The need to be hospitalized arises when the person starts having trouble in breathing. The doctor examines the patient’s lungs to find out how much the infection has progressed and whether the patient needs oxygen or ventilator.

What happens in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)?

Intensive care units are special wards of hospitals where critically ill patients are kept.

Here, the need of oxygen of patients of Corona virus is fulfilled by applying oxygen mask on the mouth or through a tube in the nose.

People who are seriously ill are kept on ventilator. Here more supply of oxygen is delivered directly to the lungs. For this, a tube is placed in the patient’s mouth or by making an incision in the nose or throat. Oxygen is given from there to the lungs.

How Deadly is the Corona Virus?

Compared to the statistics of corona virus infection, the number of people killed is extremely low. Although these figures cannot be relied completely, however, if the data are to be believed, the death rate due to infection can be only one to two percent.

A World Health Organization study based on information collected from about 56,000 infected people shows that –

  • 6% people became seriously ill due to this virus. These included lung failure, septic shock, organ failure and risk of death.
  • Severe signs of infection were seen in 14 percent of the people. People reported problems in breathing.
  • In 80% people, minor signs of infection were seen, such as fever and cough. Pneumonia due to this was also seen in many.

Older people, those already suffering from respiratory disease (asthma), those facing problems like diabetes and heart disease are more likely to become seriously ill due to corona virus infection.

Treatment of corona virus is based on helping the patient’s to breathe and increasing the body’s immunity so that the person’s body is able to fight the virus on his/her own.

If you come in contact with an infected person, then you can be advised to stay away from others for a few days.

Public Health England has said that those who think they are infected should avoid going to a doctor, pharmacy or hospital and seek information on the phone or online from the health workers in their area.

Those who have returned to the UK after traveling to other countries have been advised to separate themselves from others for a few days.

Other countries have also taken steps like closing schools, colleges and canceling public meetings in their own countries to avoid this virus.

These viral particles can enter your body by way of breath when in contact with an infected person.

If you touch a place where these particles have fallen and then touch your eye, nose or mouth with the same hand, then these particles will reach your body.

In this case, using tissue while coughing and sneezing, not touching your face without washing your hands and avoiding contact with the infected person, are very important to prevent the virus from spreading.

According to medical experts, face masks do not provide effective protection.

How Fast is the Corona Virus Spreading?

Everyday hundreds of cases of corona virus are being reported worldwide. According to the latest data from John Hopkins University, more than 1,596,496 cases of corona virus infection have been confirmed in 184 countries of the world so far.

Most cases of infection with this virus have been reported in China, US, Italy, Iran and Korea.
