Mastermind arrested for instigating violence during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh, ties to Hifazat-e-Islam

PM Narendra Modi reached there on the occasion of independence of Bangladesh on 26 March, in which the radical Muslim organization Hifazat-e-Islam had fiercely created a ruckus in Bangladesh. During this violence many people were killed.

A fundamentalist religious leader associated with an Islamic group in Bangladesh was arrested on Sunday for inciting violence in the country. Officials said a joint team of police and detectives raided an Islamic madrasa based in Mohammadpur and arrested Mamunul Haque, the joint general secretary of the organization ‘Hifazat e Islam’, which had recently been in the news for some controversies.

Seeing the police, the students demonstrated

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (Intelligence Branch) Mehboob Alam said that 47-year-old Haq was arrested at around 12.30 pm. Officials said that students and teachers of the madrasa tried to stop the raids by demonstrating. However, Haq was arrested from a room in the first floor of the madrasa.

Demonstrations held during Modi’s Bangladesh visit

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh last month, members of Hifazat-e-Islam demonstrated and attacked government buildings. These people clashed with the security forces. During the violent demonstrations some protesters were killed and dozens of people were injured.

Haq is guilty in many cases including attacks on police stations

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Haroon Ur Rashid said that Haq and other leaders of his organization are accused in many cases including attacks and vandalism on law enforcement officers and police stations. These cases are being investigated. In the past, Haq came into the limelight when he made controversial comments regarding the statues. He has also been accused of threatening the government in the past.

7 days remand to two members of the organization

In November last year, he said that the work of installing the statue of Bang Bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dholipar in the capital should be stopped immediately. Meanwhile, a Dhaka-based court sent a seven-day remand today to the Dhaka city president of Hifazat-e-Islam Junaid Al Habib and the organization’s assistant general secretary Jalaluddin, who were arrested on Saturday, in a 2013 violence case.
