UU Lalit to be 5th judge of Supreme Court Collegium, will take over from tomorrow

Justice UU Lalit will join the Supreme Court Collegium from July 20 with Justice R Banumathi retiring

With the retirement of Supreme Court judge Justice R Banumathi, Justice UU Lalit will join the Supreme Court Collegium from July 20. Justice Lalit will be the fifth senior judge of the Supreme Court who will play his role in the appointment of judges.

Explain that apart from the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and High Court, the transfer of High Court judges is also done on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium. Apart from Justice Lalit, Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice RF Nariman are included in the collegium. However, Justice Arun Mishra will retire on 5 September 2020.

Significantly, Justice YU Lalit was taken from the Bar on 13 August 2014. Justice Lalit, who started a legal career as a lawyer in June 1983, practiced in the Bombay High Court till December 1985. In January 1986, he shifted his advocacy to Delhi. He was nominated as a senior advocate of the Supreme Court in April 2004. He was also appointed by the Supreme Court as the special counsel of the CBI for hearing in 2G cases.
