On 15 August 1947, when the whole country was celebrating independence. There was such a person at that time. Who was not involved in this festival of liberation from slavery of British rule. He was silently engaged in the work of maintaining peace and harmony between Hindus and Muslims in Kolkata, thousands of kilometers from the capital Delhi.

That person is none other than the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Who decided to celebrate the day of independence by fasting. It was a few weeks before independence. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sent their envoys to Gandhiji in Kolkata. who reached there at midnight. He told Gandhiji that he had brought an important letter from Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel to him. Gandhiji asked him if he had eaten. On not asking him, they first fed him food and then opened the letter and saw it.

It was written in it.. Bapu, you are the father of the nation. 15 August 1947 will be the first Independence Day. We want you to come to Delhi and give us your blessings. After reading the letter, Mahatma Gandhi said… what a foolish thing. When Bengal is burning. Hindus and Muslims are killing each other and I can hear their mourning cries in the darkness of Kolkata. Then how can I go to Delhi with light in my heart. I will have to stay here to maintain peace in Bengal and if need be, I will have to give my life to ensure harmony and peace.

Gandhiji went out to send off the messenger. He was standing under a tree. Then a dry leaf fell from the branch. Gandhiji picked it up and placed it on his palm and said… my friend, you are returning to Delhi. What gift can Gandhi give to Pandit Nehru and Patel? I have neither power nor wealth. Give this dry leaf to Nehru and Patel as my first Independence Day gift. when he was saying this. The angel’s eyes lit up. Gandhiji said with a laugh.. God is so merciful. He does not want Gandhi to send dry leaves. So, he got it wet. It is sparkling with joy. Take this leaf soaked in your tears as a gift.

On the day of independence, ministers of the West Bengal government also went to meet Gandhiji to seek his blessings. Gandhiji told him.. Be humble, beware of power. Power corrupts. Remember, you are in a position to serve the poor villages of India. In Noakhali, Gandhi traveled from village to village to establish harmony between Hindus and Muslims. He had only religious books. He appealed to all Hindus and Muslims to maintain peace and administered an oath to them that they would not kill each other. He used to stay for a few days in every village to see whether the promise he had made was being followed.

At the same time a heart touching incident happened in a village. Gandhiji asked the Hindus and Muslims of that village to come out of their huts for mass prayer and take a collective oath for peace but no old man came out. Gandhiji waited for half an hour but even after that when no Hindu or Muslim came out, he showed the ball he had brought with him and said to the children of the village.. Children, your parents are afraid of each other but what are you afraid of? Is. Hindus and Muslims may fear each other but children are innocent. You are God’s child. I am calling you to play ball.

Hearing this, the children started moving towards the stage where Gandhiji was sitting. When Gandhiji threw the ball towards him, boys and girls also started throwing the ball back towards him. After playing the ball for half an hour, he told the villagers.. You don’t have the courage. If you want such courage, take inspiration from your children. A child belonging to Muslim community is not intimidated by a child belonging to Hindu community.

Similarly a Hindu child is not afraid of a Muslim child. Everyone came together and played with me for half an hour. Kindly learn something from them. If you don’t have inner courage, learn something from your children. At the behest of Gandhiji, the elders of Hindu and Muslim community slowly started coming out of their homes and seeing a large crowd gathered there and they took an oath that they would not kill each other.

An incident that happened to Gandhiji in Noakhali shows his fearlessness, patience, tolerance and forgiveness. Gandhiji’s prayer meeting was going on in a village, when a Muslim man suddenly pounced on him and grabbed his throat. He fell down from this attack, but before falling, he said a beautiful verse from the Quran, hearing which he fell at his feet and started saying with guilt.. I am sorry. I was committing a crime. I am ready to be with you to protect you. Give me any job Tell me what should I do. Gandhiji told him.. you do only one thing. When you go back home, don’t tell anyone what you did to me. Otherwise there will be Hindu-Muslim riots. Forget me and myself. Hearing this, the man went away repenting. Due to the Bhagirath efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, peace was established in Noakhali. On the success of his peace mission, Lord Mountbatten wrote a letter to him on 26 August 1947, praising him and said. We have fifty-five thousand soldiers in Punjab but there is rampant violence. There was only one man in our army in Bengal and there was no violence. As a service officer and administrator, I would like to salute this one man’s army.
