Elon Musk’s SpaceX will send DOGE-1 satellite to the moon, payment will be done with Dogecoin cryptocurrency
Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation will lead the mission. Musk also shared the announcement of the lunar mission on Twitter on Sunday, which read, “To the Moon!!”
SpaceX will launch its satellite on the moon next year. The Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation, which is leading the mission, has said that the satellite will be funded entirely by the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
The Calgary-based company said that the satellite DOGE-1 will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the first quarter of 2022. This cubic satellite will be 88 pounds (40 kg) and will collect lunar spatial intelligence from onboard cameras and sensors.
“The DOGE-1 mission to the Moon will be the first commercial lunar payload in history to be fully funded by Dogecoin,” Geometric Energy Corporation said without mentioning the total cost of the project. “We’re very excited to launch ‘DOGE-1 to the Moon.’
The announcement came a day after SpaceX founder Elon Musk hosted the live sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). During this event he praised Dogecoin which was started as a joke. But it became legit thanks to a tweet from this prodigious tech entrepreneur.
The Tesla founder, who boosted the cryptocurrency, said on the SNL show about Dogecoin, “It’s an unstoppable vehicle that will soon take over the world.” Musk also shared the announcement of the lunar mission on Twitter on Sunday, which read, “To the Moon!!”
