After months of delay, the first formal peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban have begun on Saturday.
The aim of this is to stop the war that has been going on for two decades, which has taken away thousands of lives.
This peace dialogue is going on in the Gulf country Qatar. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described the meeting between the two sides as ‘historic’. They have reached Doha, the capital of Qatar, to attend the opening ceremony of this dialogue.
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will also participate in this program through online medium. Indian Foreign Ministry has told that JP Singh, Joint Secretary of the Ministry has reached Doha, he will attend this inauguration ceremony as an Indian representative.
India is also believed to be keenly interested in the Afghanistan-Taliban peace talks and wants the negotiations between the two to be successful.
The talks were to begin in March after the first US-Taliban security agreement in February. But disagreements over the exchange of a controversial prisoner and continuing violence in Afghanistan hindered the next stages of this dialogue.
A delegation of some prominent Afghan leaders and officials arrived in Kabul from Kabul on Friday, 11 September.
On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda carried out extremist attacks on America, after which the US attacked Afghanistan and removed the Taliban from power. It gave shelter to al-Qaeda’s leadership.
The head of the delegation of Afghan leaders, Abdullah Abdullah, says that “they want just and just and dignified peace”.
On Thursday, after the release of a final group of six inmates, the Taliban confirmed that they too were participating in the peace talks.
What kind of expectations from the talks?
This is the first direct formal dialogue between the Taliban and the Afghan government representatives. Earlier, the Taliban refused to meet the Afghan government, describing it as ‘powerless and a puppet of America’.
Now both sides want an end to the decades-long period of political reconciliation and violence that began in 1979 with the Soviet invasion.
This meeting, which is happening now, was to begin in March after the agreement between the US and Taliban in January, but the war in Afghanistan is still going on.
The agreement between the US and the Taliban was not a peace agreement, but rather a step towards peace.
The agreement set a deadline for the removal of foreign forces from Afghanistan to begin the process of dialogue between the extremists and the Afghan government.
After months of tussle between the two sides on the exchange of prisoners, this peace dialogue is going to start. In fact, most of the prisoners the Taliban wanted to release were the opinion of the Afghan government ‘how can they leave those who killed their people’.
Some major concerns
At the same time, there are some concerns about the Taliban and Afghanistan peace talks. For example, organizations working for women’s rights believe that ‘after this dialogue, the talk of women’s rights in Afghanistan has not increased to zero again.’
They fear that after the agreement with the Taliban, women’s rights will not be taken away again because the Taliban did so.
The Taliban used to govern through barbaric methods of Sharia law, but now this group says that it has changed. but how much? Nobody knows this.
This conversation can go on for many months because consensus will be required during the talks on many issues. While there are many issues on which the Taliban’s view is not clear at all. Like will the Taliban support the democratic system? Taliban interlocutors have no direct answer to this.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has made it clear that after forcing for 18 years in Afghanistan, he now wants to get his troops back to their country at the earliest.
As of 2014, more than 2,400 American soldiers had officially died in Afghanistan and the Afghan war is called the longest war in US history.
In February, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appealed to the Taliban to “live up to their promises to break ties with al-Qaeda and other extremist organizations, continue to fight ISIS and continue to strive to reduce violence in our country.” . “
But at the start of this peace talks, some people are worried that the Taliban may not get much importance from this dialogue.
Why is negotiation important for India?
India is helping Afghanistan to rise again, but some experts say that “the strengthening of the Taliban in Afghanistan may be a matter of concern for India”.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, there are around 1700 Indians in Afghanistan who work in hospitals, banking and security and IT sectors, besides companies located there.
Under the agreement, India has invested extensively in Afghanistan. Apart from building a new parliament building in Afghanistan, India is associated with plans to build dams, roads, educational institutions and hospitals there.
India is also supporting Afghanistan in agriculture, science, IT and refugee resettlement programs.
Chabahar port of Iran under 2016 agreement There is a plan to run rail from Afghan border to. India also wants to help make this plan a success. In such a situation, if this peace talks fails or its results are not favorable to India, then difficulties may also increase for India.
