Relief for Indians in Kuwait, declaration of exemption in job laws

The government of Kuwait has drafted a law in which foreign people will be allowed to work in the country.

Kuwait is trying to maintain a balance of employment between its citizens and people from outside.

Under the new law, domestic workers, citizens of Gulf Corporation Council member countries, government contract workers, diplomats and relatives of Kuwaiti citizens will be excluded from the quota system.

The aim of this law is to prevent people from other countries from getting jobs in Kuwait.

However, employers have been allowed to give jobs to a certain number of foreigners.

15% quota for Indians

Provision of jail sentence and fine has been made for employers for recruiting more people than the prescribed quota for the recruitment of foreigners.

Under the proposed law, a quota of 15 per cent has been fixed for Indian people working in Kuwait.

For Sri Lanka, Philippines, Egypt, a quota of ten percent was fixed while for Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Vietnam a quota of five percent has been fixed.

The draft of the proposed law has been sent to the Human Resource Development Committee of Kuwait for consideration.

According to ‘Arab News’, the committee has said that after the new law comes into force, those who have exceeded the prescribed quota will not be asked to go to their country, but the appointment from those countries will remain until it May not meet the prescribed quota.

Most Diaspora Indians in Kuwait

It is believed that out of the nearly 10 lakh overseas Indians living there, eight or eight and a half lakh people may have to return in case the bill passes.

The native Kuwaitis have a population of only thirteen-and-a-half million, out of a total population of about 4.5 million of this small country in the north of Saudi Arabia and south of Iraq.

Indians living in Egypt, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries are the largest Indians.

The National Assembly of Kuwait elects 50 MPs. However, it is believed that the rich are in a decision-making role there.

From the end of the 19th century to 1961, Indians had started going to Kuwait, which was under Britain’s ‘protection’ for a long time.
