Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised on Sunday that he would criminalize sex work in the country.
On the last day of the three-day Congress of the Socialist Party in Valencia, he told his supporters that he would end the practice of ‘enslavement’ of women.
Sex work was made illegal in Spain in 1995, and in 2016 the United Nations estimated the country’s sex industry to be worth $4.2 billion.

A 2009 survey found that 1 in 3 Spanish men have sex for money.
However, in 2009 a report was published in which it was estimated at more than 39%. In 2011, United Nations research said that Spain is the third largest center of sex work after Thailand and Puerto Rico.
There are no rules regarding sex work in Spain and there is no punishment even if someone does not have sex in a public place by paying for it.
But brokering or making an alliance between a sex worker and his client is an illegal act.
After making sex work illegal, it has increased rapidly in Spain and according to an estimate, there are currently around 3 lakh female sex workers in the country.
