World Bank Gives Big Responsibility to Indian Economist Abhas Jha
Indian economist Abhas K Jha has been appointed by the World Bank to hold a key position on climate change and disaster management in South Asia. Jha’s appointment comes at a time when Cyclone Amphon has also badly affected West Bengal, Orissa and Bangladesh in India. The World Bank will use their capacity to manage climate change and disaster risk in South Asia. One of Jha’s top priorities will be to encourage and help the South Asia Region (SAR) disaster risk management and climate change team to connect and collaborate.
The bank said that Jha will work closely with other practice managers, Global Leads and Global Solutions Groups to promote global knowledge and its flow to create innovative and high-quality development solutions and serve these countries on a large scale. According to the World Bank, Jha has to nurture, lead, inspire and deploy a team of highly and qualified professionals to provide the best solution to the problems of these countries.

In 2001 Jha joined the World Bank. He has been the Executive Director in the Bank offices of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka. He has worked in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Central Asia, East Asia and the Pacific regions. His most recent work has been as a practice manager for urban development and disaster risk management in East Asia and the Pacific. His jurisdiction includes India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives.
