Dates for mid-term general elections in Nepal will be announced in two phases next year
According to a notice issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Bhandari announced to hold mid-term elections for the first phase on April 30 and the second phase on May 10.
Nepal’s President Vidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the Parliament on Sunday on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. He also announced to conduct mid-term general elections in April-May. According to a notice issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Bhandari announced to hold mid-term elections for the first phase on April 30 and the second phase on May 10.
According to the notice, he dissolved the parliament according to Article 76, sections one and seven, and article 85 of the Constitution of Nepal. Earlier, in an emergency meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Oli, it was decided to recommend the President to dissolve the House of Representatives of Parliament.
In the year 2017, there are 275 members in the elected House of Representatives or the lower house of Parliament. The upper house is the National Assembly.
This step has been taken at a time when the internal discord in the ruling party Nepal Communist Party (NCP) reached its peak. The clash between the two factions of the party has been going on for months. While one section is headed by 68-year-old Oli, the other faction is headed by the Working President of the party and former Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’.
