General elections held in Sri Lanka between Corona, Rajapaksa’s party likely to win

Colombo: The counting of parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka started on Thursday, in which the Sri Lankan People’s Party (SLPP) run by the Rajapaksa family is likely to win. Earlier, this election has been postponed twice. National Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshpri said that the elections were conducted in a peaceful manner amid the outbreak of Kovid-19 epidemic, in which 70 percent polling has been recorded.

According to a report, with the counting of votes started, SLPP founder and national organizer Basil Rajapaksa said that his party is ready to form a new government. Basil is the brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Ministerial contender Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“We are confident that the SLPP will register a historic victory, we are expecting a two-thirds majority in the elections but it will be decided by the people,” he said, adding that he is confident that President Gotbaiah and Prime Minister Mahinda Under the leadership of the economy will be better.

Election Commission President Deshpriya said that the results will be declared by Thursday evening. Mahinda Rajapaksa told reporters after the vote, “We hope to win by a two-thirds majority”. Hope to get support this time.

This election had to be postponed twice due to the epidemic. Elections are being held for up to five years of 225 members of parliament. About 16 million people have the right to vote for the election of 196 out of 225 MPs. At the same time, 29 other MPs will be selected from the national list to be made according to the votes obtained by each party.

Earlier these elections were to be held on 25 April but in view of Corona virus epidemic, its date was extended to 20 June. After this, keeping the instructions of the health officials, the election date was further extended to five August. More than 7,200 candidates from about 20 political parties and 34 independent groups are in the fray from 22 electoral districts.
