US President Donald Trump postponed election rally after controversy
US President Donald Trump postponed his first election rally to be held after the corona virus lockdown.
The rally was scheduled to take place in Talsa, Oklahoma. The day when this rally was to be held, the same day, the end of slavery is celebrated in America and there is a holiday.
President Trump tweeted that the June 19 rally has been postponed for a day in view of the juncture. He wrote that it has been done with respect.
In the midst of anti-racist demonstrations, there was criticism for choosing this date for the rally.
There was also controversy over the election of the venue of the rally, as the most horrific massacre of black people in US history took place during 1921 in Talsa.
A mob of whites attacked “Black Wall Street”, a rich area of black people in Greenwood, with guns and ammunition. More than 300 people died in this incident. Nearly 1000 businesses and homes were also destroyed.
Juneteenth is not just a nationwide holiday, but African Americans celebrate it as a special day.
President Trump initially defended the timing of the rally. He told Fox News, “It should be seen as a celebration. My rally is a celebration. I think there will be no group or person in the history of politics who has rallied like me.”
But critics accused him of disrespecting Tulsa’s importance on this particular date and in American history.
Giving information about his decision to postpone the rally, Trump tweeted, “Many of my African-American friends and supporters suggested changing the date in honour of the day. So take note of this opportunity and the reason behind it.” Keeping in mind, I have decided to extend our rally further on 20 June. “
Why is Trump holding a rally?
The “Make America Great Again” rally in Talsa will be the president’s first electoral campaign since March 2, after which a large number of people were banned from gathering in view of the Corona virus epidemic.
Trump is going to contest again in November 2020. But polls show that he is behind his Democratic rival Joe Biden.
Campaign rallies are considered important to increase their voter base, and Oklahoma is traditionally considered a stronghold of Republickin.
