New Delhi:

The ongoing tussle between Twitter and the central government is not taking its name to stop. The central government has given a final warning to micro-blogging site Twitter that the new digital rules should be implemented immediately or else serious consequences may have to be faced. Earlier, Twitter today unverified the Twitter accounts of three big leaders, including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Apart from this, the blue tick was also removed from the personal account of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. However, later the blue tick of the Vice President’s account was restored.

In a letter written to Twitter by Rakesh Maheshwari, Group Coordinator of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), on June 5, it has been said that the Twitter letter has neither given an explanation on the implementation of the new digital rules nor implemented them.

The ministry has written in the light of letters dated 26 May 2021 and 28 May 2021 on the new digital rules that Twitter has not provided the details of Compliance Officer, Grievance Redressal Officer and Nodal Officer till date. It has been said in the letter that the office address of Twitter is also of a law firm, which is not in accordance with the rules.

The ministry has clearly said in its letter that if Twitter does not comply with the new digital rules, then its legal status of ‘intermediary’ can be abolished under section 79 of the IT Act 2000. The letter further states that the people of India who use the Twitter platform have the right to a clean mechanism so that their grievances can be properly redressed.
