Another black man dies after George Floyd, Atlanta police chief resigns
The Atlanta police chief has resigned in connection with the shooting of an African-American man while sleeping in a car near a restaurant.
The administration says that 27-year-old Rashard Brooks was shot dead by a policeman during the skirmish on Friday.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has said that Erica Shields resigned on Saturday.
Protesters in Atlanta took to the street and demanded action against Brooks’ death.
On Saturday evening, protesters closed a main highway called Interstate-75 in Atlanta.
The restaurant outside which Wendy’s died, was also set on fire.
Protests have continued throughout the United States since the death of George Floyd, a black American in police custody for the past three weeks.
Erica Shields had been the chief of police since December 2016 and had been working with the Atlanta Police Department for 20 years.
Mayor Bottom has said that she will be associated with the department in another role.
“He wishes that Atlanta should be a model in this country in terms of reform,” said Bottoms in a statement, in view of which Chief Shields proposed to step down so that the city would move forward and strengthen the sense of trust in communities is needed. “
Mayor Bottom also ordered the dismissal of the officer involved in Brooks’ murder.

According to a GBI report, in a footage from a Wendy’s restaurant, police officers are trying to apprehend Brooks and shoot a taser gun at an officer.
“After that the officers shoot at Brooks,” the report said.
After this, Brooks was found grounded. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. One officer was also injured in this incident, who was treated.
The statement said that the Fulton County District Attorney’s office is conducting a separate investigation into the matter.
Brooks’ family lawyer has said that the police officer does not have the right to use deadly power. He said that Brooks had snatched the Taser Gun which is not a lethal weapon.
