New Delhi: Social media platform Twitter today removed blue ticks from the personal Twitter accounts of some Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders, including Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. However, later seeing the controversy escalating, Twitter reinstated the blue tick of the Vice President’s personal account. In this case, Twitter clarified that this has happened due to the account not being logged in since July 2020. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has expressed displeasure over this action of Twitter. The ministry has said that Twitter will be dealt with strictly in this matter.

What is the Twitter controversy?

During the farmers’ movement, the farmers took out a tractor parade on Republic Day. During that time there was violence at the historic Red Fort and the miscreants hoisted the religious flag instead of the tricolor. After this, the central government had instructed Twitter to block 1100 accounts and remove many controversial hashtags. The government claimed that most of these accounts are of Khalistan supporters, who are spreading propaganda in the farmers’ movement and sharing false information on social media.

On the instructions of the government, Twitter blocked some accounts and removed the controversial hashtags, but later reinstated several accounts, saying most of them belong to media people, journalists and social workers. Twitter issued a statement saying, “We will continue to advocate for freedom of expression and are also working its way in accordance with Indian law.” Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed displeasure over the action of Twitter.

Controversy between Congress Toolkit and Manipulated Media:

In the midst of the second wave of corona virus, when people were struggling with lack of oxygen and beds in hospitals, the central government was being criticized a lot on social media. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra and BJP general secretary BL Santosh shared screenshots of two four-page documents on Twitter and claimed that it was a toolkit of the Congress. One of these documents was related to Corona and the other to Central Vista.

In the midst of the second wave of corona virus, when it was alleged that the Congress was defaming the Modi government on social media through its people. Several BJP leaders shared Patra’s tweet with the hashtag #CongressToolkitExposed. Many Union ministers were also involved in this.

Congress leaders took to Twitter to complain that BJP leaders were sharing fake documents. Taking action on this, Twitter gave the tag of ‘Manipulated Media’ to Patra’s post. BJP got angry with this and asked to remove the tag. On the other hand, the Special Cell of Delhi Police called on Twitter to respond to the Congress Toolkit Manipulated case and asked to share all the details of the case with Delhi Police.


Delhi Police reached Twitter’s office:

Not only this, a six-member team of Delhi Police also reached the Gurugram and Ladosarai offices of Twitter on 24 May. It was said that the police had gone to the Managing Director (India) of Twitter to serve notice in the matter. Twitter had expressed displeasure over this.
