The punishment was received from the High Court

Earlier in May 2018, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had convicted him of causing hurt to a 65-year-old man and sentenced him to jail and also imposed a fine of one thousand rupees on him. But on 15 May 2018, a bench of Justice J Chelameswar and Justice Kaul in the Supreme Court held Sidhu guilty under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code, setting aside the High Court’s decision. But only fine action was taken against them. The victim’s family reviewed the case and the verdict and said that there was an error in the record, which only held them guilty of causing hurt.

What happened on the day of the incident?

The incident is of 27 December 1988. According to the prosecution, Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu were in their car and had an argument with a man named Gurnam Singh. Police claim that Navjot Singh Sidhu assaulted Gurnam Singh and then fled from the spot. The victim was later taken to the hospital, where he died.

Navjot Singh Sidhu and Rupinder Singh Sandhu were acquitted by the trial court in the case in 1999. But in 2006 the High Court reversed this decision. Later this matter was challenged in the Supreme Court. In 2007, pending the hearing of the petition filed by Navjot Singh Sidhu, stayed his conviction and granted him bail.
