Pranab’s book claims Nepal wanted to merge with India, but Nehru rejected the proposal

Former President Pranab Mukherjee has made a shocking claim about former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Pranab Mukherjee has claimed that Nehru rejected the proposal to merge Nepal into India. Former President Pranab Mukherjee has claimed in his much talked about autobiography ‘The Presidential Years’ that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru turned down King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah’s proposal to merge Nepal into India. She also said that if she had been replaced by Indira, she might not have done so.

Under the title ‘My Prime Ministers: Different Styles, Different Temperaments’, Chapter 11 of Autobiography ‘The Presidential Years’, Pranab Mukherjee wrote that Raja Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah had proposed to Nehru that he should merge Nepal into India. The province should be made, but the then Prime Minister rejected the proposal. He further writes that if Indira Gandhi were in place of Nehru, she would not have let the occasion go as she did with Sikkim.

Pranab Mukherjee wrote in his last book, PM Modi should listen to the voice of disagreement and speak often in Parliament.

He wrote in his book, ‘Nehru dealt with Nepal in a very diplomatic manner. Haru played an important role in strengthening democracy after the monarchy replacing the Rana regime in Nepal. Interestingly, King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah of Nepal suggested to Nehru that Nepal should be made a province of India. But Nehru declined the offer. ‘ He says that Nepal is an independent nation and it should remain so. He further writes that if Indira Gandhi had been in her place, she might have taken advantage of the opportunity, as she had done with Sikkim.

Expressing his views on former Prime Ministers and Presidents of India, he mentioned in the book that every PM has his own style of functioning. Lal Bahadur Shastri held positions that were very different from Nehru’s. He wrote that even if the same party is on issues like foreign policy, security and internal administration, there can be different perceptions among Prime Ministers.

Meanwhile, his sister and Congress party spokesperson Sharmishtha Mukherjee said that her father had approved the book. Also, he has advised Abhijeet to avoid cheap popularity.
