Sidhu surrenders in Patiala court in road rage case

Patiala, May 20 (Agency): Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu surrendered in a local court on Friday, a day after the Supreme Court sentenced him to one year’s rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 ‘road rage’ case. Sidhu reached the district court along with some party leaders including Navtej Singh Cheema. The court is located near the residence of the former president of the Punjab unit of Congress.

Cheema took Sidhu to the court in an SUV. On Friday morning some supporters had reached Sidhu’s residence. Patiala District Congress Committee President Narinder Pal Lali had said in a message to party supporters on Thursday night that Sidhu would reach the court at 10 am. He had urged the workers to reach the court premises at around 9.30 am. Cricketer-turned-politician Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu also reached her residence in Patiala on Thursday night. The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one year’s rigorous imprisonment in the 34-year-old ‘road rage’ case, saying any “undue sympathy” by awarding an inadequate sentence would cause more damage to the justice system and This will reduce public confidence in the law. A 65-year-old man was killed in a road rage incident. Following the apex court’s decision, Sidhu had tweeted saying that he would “surrender before the law”.
