SP’s 62-member new executive announced; Akhilesh Yadav included 14 general secretaries including national president, Shivpal Yadav, Swami Prasad Maurya

The Samajwadi Party on Sunday announced its 62-member National Executive. Akhilesh Yadav was made the national president and his uncle Shivpal Yadav was made the general secretary. Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently courted controversy with his remarks on Ramcharitmanas, and veteran leader Azam Khan are also among the 14 national general secretaries.

The uncle-nephew duo of Shivpal and Akhilesh, who were separated in 2016, came together during the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll in December last year following the death of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The SP released the list of 62 national executive members on its Twitter handle on Sunday. In 2016, the then SP’s Uttar Pradesh unit president Shivpal Yadav had an open tussle with the then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and was sacked from the Uttar Pradesh cabinet. Sidelined in the party, Shivpal Yadav formed the Progressive Samajwadi Party (Lohia) in 2018 and contested from Firozabad against his nephew Akshay Yadav.

After his show of unity in Mainpuri, there was speculation that he might be formally rehabilitated in the party.

A former minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, Maurya switched from the BJP to the SP ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections and lost the Fazilnagar seat.

Other national general secretaries are Ravi Prakash Verma, Balram Yadav, Vishwambhar Prasad Nishad, Awadhesh Prasad, Indrajit Saroj, Ramjilal Suman, Lalji Verma, Ram Achal Rajbhar, J Antony, Harendra Malik and Neeraj Chowdhary.
