• Terrorists started pressurizing Kashmiri Pandits to change their religion. The terrorists wanted all the Pandits living in Kashmir to adopt Muslim religion. So that only Muslims have the right in this valley.

• The Kashmiri Pandits who accepted this point of the terrorists and changed their religion, they were allowed to stay here before eternity. But the Pandits who did not change their religion and had decided not to leave this valley, were subjected to a lot of atrocities. Due to which many Kashmiri Pandits left this state in the year 1990 and settled in other states of India.

Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits

When India became independent, at that time a war broke out between India and Pakistan over the rights over Kashmir. Pakistan had made lakhs of efforts to make it (Kashmir) a part of its country but it failed to do so. After which Pakistan tried to capture Kashmir with the help of terror. Due to which, by the 1980s, anti-Indian protests in Kashmir started increasing significantly.

In the 1980s, several Islamist groups supporting the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and Pakistan began to strengthen and these groups intensified the work of spreading hatred towards India among the Muslim population here. Which started affecting the Kashmiri Pandits here.

In the year 1988, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front started separatist insurgency to liberate Kashmir from India. Due to this separatist rebellion, in 1989, a Kashmiri Hindu named Tika Lal Taplu was assassinated. Tika Lal was a well-known leader, who was associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Due to this murder, fear started to arise in the mind of the Kashmiri Pandit community and the people of this community started feeling insecure.

On January 4, 1990, an advertisement was published in the Urdu newspapers of Kashmir by the terrorist organization Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. In this advertisement, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen ordered all the Pandits to leave the valley immediately. It was written in this advertisement that either leave Kashmir or change religion, otherwise get ready to die. This advertisement was published in the newspapers for a long time, so that fear remained in the minds of the pundits.

A few days after this advertisement, this terrorist organization started atrocities on Kashmiri Pandits of the valley and started killing the Pandits.

The murder of a government employee in January

• In January 1990, government employees were murdered in Srinagar, whose names were ML Bhan and Baldev Raj Dutta. Both of them were Kashmiri Pandits, both of them were murdered on 15 January.

• After the killing of these two employees, tension in the valley increased further and on the 19th, four days after their murder, the situation in the valley worsened.

• Everywhere Pandits were asked to leave the valley through loud speakers. Not only this, posters were put up outside the houses of Pandits and they were threatened to leave Kashmir.

• It is said that on the night of January 19, the Muslim people living here came out on the streets and started asking the Pandits to leave Kashmir. After which the pundits sought help from the government, but neither the state government nor the central government helped them.

• At the same time, Pandit women living here were also raped and small children were also killed. Due to all these incidents, the people here finally decided to leave the valley.

• By the end of the month of January, lakhs of Pandits living in Kashmir left the Valley and moved to different parts of the country. Some Pandits settled in Jammu and some Pandits left this state.

Government has failed (Government Role)

When these atrocities were being committed against Kashmiri Pandits, at that time there was a government of VP Singh at the center and Farooq Ubudula’s government in the state. But none of the central and state governments helped the Kashmiri Pandits in any way.

Population of Kashmiri Pandits

According to the government data, till the year 1990, about 1 lakh 70 thousand Pandits lived in Kashmir. But it is said that in reality this figure was much higher.
